Sungei Tampines
Under the Active, Beautiful, Clean (ABC) Waters Programme, the 1.4km stretch of Sungei Tampines between Tampines Avenue 7 and the Tampines Expressway will be enhanced. The enhancement will come alongside with drainage improvement works to increase drainage capacity and provide provide a better experience for residents and park users. The ABC Waters Programme in Sungei Tampines is slatted to be completed by the last quarter of 2021. Future residents of Lumina Grand will be able to enjoy higher quality of life living in the neighbourhood.
The presence of Sungei Tampines enhances the biodiversity of the region, providing a natural environment where residents and visitors can observe various species of birds, fish, and other wildlife. The riverbanks are often lined with lush vegetation, which helps to stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, and provide shelter for animals.
Sungei Tampines has been carefully integrated into the urban development of the surrounding areas, particularly in how it interacts with residential neighborhoods and recreational spaces. The river passes through or near several housing estates, parks, and community spaces, including the well-known Pasir Ris Park.
To enhance the aesthetic appeal and usability of the river, efforts have been made to create scenic walkways and cycling paths along its banks. These paths allow residents to enjoy leisure activities like jogging, cycling, and walking while staying connected to nature. The integration of Sungei Tampines into these spaces reflects Singapore’s broader vision of creating a “City in a Garden,” where urban living and nature coexist harmoniously.
Sungei Tampines also plays a critical role in Singapore’s water management and sustainability efforts. As part of the country’s extensive network of waterways, the river is involved in drainage and flood control, helping to manage stormwater runoff from the surrounding urban areas. The management of the river is part of Singapore’s broader strategy to ensure water security and environmental sustainability.
The river has also been incorporated into the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme by Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB). This initiative aims to transform Singapore’s waterways into beautiful and clean streams, rivers, and lakes that provide spaces for recreation and foster community spirit. Through this program, the water quality of Sungei Tampines is closely monitored and maintained, ensuring that it remains a valuable natural asset for the community.
The area around Sungei Tampines is used as an educational resource to raise awareness about environmental conservation and the importance of water management. Schools and community groups often organize activities such as nature walks, clean-up drives, and environmental education programs along the river. These activities help to foster a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural environment among residents, particularly the younger generation.
In summary, Sungei Tampines is more than just a river; it is an integral part of the Tampines area’s natural landscape, urban planning, and environmental sustainability efforts. Its role in supporting biodiversity, enhancing recreational spaces, and contributing to water management makes it a valuable resource for both the environment and the community. Through careful planning and conservation efforts, Sungei Tampines continues to enrich the lives of those who live and work in the surrounding areas.
